Volunteer: Driver's Assistant - Wednesday

Volunteer Waiver

Are you driven to help fight against hunger? If so, consider volunteering as a Driver’s Assistant, where you will accompany one of our Food Shuttle drivers on a truck, collecting food from our partner agencies in the surrounding service counties.

Where to Check-In?

Please arrive on time and enter through the center entrance of the Vernon Malone Center. You will be greeted by a staff member at the front desk and brought to the warehouse when it is time to be paired with a driver.

Dress Code

You must wear CLOSED-TOE/HEEL SHOES. We recommend bringing gloves, water, and a snack or lunch, as you will be on the road for most of the day. There is NO smoking or vaping in the Food Shuttle vehicles.

Shift Duration

It is important to be on time for your shift. If you are late, you will not be able to volunteer for this opportunity, as our drivers must stay on schedule for their pick-up and drop-off times. Drivers will not return to the Raleigh Warehouse until they are done with their route and will only return early for emergencies. When registering for a shift, please ensure you can arrive at the warehouse by 8 AM and expect to stay until at least 2:45 PM. If you are unable to commit to the entire shift, please refrain from signing up.

Tasks

To maintain route productivity, we ask for these volunteers to feel comfortable lifting approximately 40 lbs. (equivalent to a medium bag of dog food). Expect medium to heavy lifting loading/unloading food donations, recording food weight, and categorizing food per program. Other duties may be assigned by our Warehouse Manager depending on the needs of the day.

Allergies: Please bring any allergy medications (i.e., bees, plants, etc.). There are active bee colonies on the property’s periphery and we ask volunteers to bring any appropriate allergy medication.

Injuries: If you are interested in indoor/lower-impact volunteer activities at the Farm, please consider our limited Indoor Farm Shift opportunity or other volunteer opportunities at the Food Shuttle. We ask volunteers to be at least 4-6 weeks post-operation, may request a doctor’s note for physical injuries subject to monitored healing, and we will not allow volunteers with broken bones or sprained ligaments to participate.

YOUTH VOLUNTEERS

All volunteers must be 13 years old to volunteer. Minors 16 years old and younger must be accompanied by an adult. If volunteering as a group, we ask for a 1:5 adult-to-youth ratio and all chaperones must sign up and work alongside their youth volunteers. Our Farm Policies and Procedures outline the age restrictions.

Join our staff in packing and monitoring Grocery Bag distribution!

CHECK-IN

Please arrive on time and enter through the center entrance of the Vernon Malone Center. You will be greeted by a staff member or volunteer at the front desk for check-in and orientation. Once everyone is up-to-speed with the program and safety procedures, volunteers will head back to the warehouse!

TASKS: *PACK AND MONITOR SHIFT*

Volunteers will meet first at the Malone Center to pack fresh produce and non-perishable food items into grocery bags. After packing, volunteers will be given instructions on how to oversee the monitoring of the bags at the designated site. We ask volunteers to be prepared to transport the food using personal vehicles. Volunteers will stay at their assigned site until the end of the specified pickup window. 

The distribution of bags among the residents will take place in a community/common space. An issuance roster will be provided. Volunteers are to leave the roster with the site coordinator or in their box outside their office.

Packing will be held at Vernon Malone Center, 1001 Blair Drive. Raleigh, NC 27603.

YOUTH VOLUNTEERS

CHECK-IN

Please arrive on time and enter through the center entrance of the Vernon Malone Center. You will be greeted by a staff member or volunteer at the front desk for check-in and orientation. Once everyone is up-to-speed with the program and safety procedures, volunteers will head back to the warehouse!

TASKS: *PACK AND MONITOR SHIFT*

Volunteers will meet first at the Malone Center to pack fresh produce and non-perishable food items into grocery bags. After packing, volunteers will be given instructions on how to oversee the monitoring of the bags at the designated site. We ask volunteers to be prepared to transport the food using personal vehicles. Volunteers will stay at their assigned site until the end of the specified pickup window. 

The distribution of bags among the residents will take place in a community/common space. An issuance roster will be provided. Volunteers are to leave the roster with the site coordinator or in their box outside their office.

Packing will be held at Vernon Malone Center, 1001 Blair Drive. Raleigh, NC 27603.

DRESS CODE

You must wear CLOSED-TOE/HEEL SHOES.

YOUTH VOLUNTEERS

All volunteers must be 8 years old to volunteer. Minors 18 years old and younger must be accompanied by an adult. If volunteering as a group, we ask for a 1:4 adult-to-youth ratio and all chaperones must sign up and work alongside their youth volunteers.

You must wear CLOSED-TOE/HEEL SHOES. We recommend bringing a water bottle.

Tasks

Expect light to medium lifting and unpacking/packing food. For organization and consistency, volunteers will form an assembly line to pack individual BPB with a variety of non-perishable food items to be distributed to students in need of food assistance. Volunteers will be assigned to certain tasks to complete the packing process. It is important that quality checks are thoroughly done throughout the packing, and volunteers must adhere to proper food safety practices.

Other duties may be assigned by our Warehouse Manager depending on the needs of the day.

All volunteers must be 13 years old to volunteer. Minors 16 years old and younger must be accompanied by an adult. If volunteering as a group, we ask for a 1:4 adult-to-youth ratio and all chaperones must sign up and work alongside their youth volunteers. Our Child Food Hub Policies and Procedures outline the age restrictions here.

Our address is 2436 S Miami Blvd, Durham, NC 27703, and the warehouse is in the back right corner of the parking lot. You will be greeted by a staff member in the office and brought to the warehouse when it is time to be paired with a driver.

 

Dress Code

You must wear CLOSED-TOE/HEEL SHOES. We recommend bringing gloves, water, and a snack or lunch. Volunteers may take a lunch break from 1 - 1:30 PM. There is NO smoking or vaping in the Food Shuttle vehicles.

 

Shift Duration

It is important to be on time for your shift. If you are late, there is a strong chance that you will not be able to volunteer for this opportunity, as our drivers must stay on schedule for their pick-up and drop-off times. Drivers will not return to the Durham Warehouse until they are done with their route and will only return early for emergencies. When registering for a shift, please make sure you can be at the warehouse by 9 AM and expect to stay until at least 2:30 PM If you cannot commit to the entire shift, please do not sign up.

To maintain route productivity, we ask for volunteers to be comfortable lifting approximately 50 lbs. (equivalent to a large bag of dog food). Expect medium to heavy lifting, loading/unloading food donations, recording food weight, and categorizing food per program. Other duties may be assigned by our Warehouse Manager depending on the needs of the day.
