What is Galaxy?
Galaxy Digital is a volunteer management service that displays our volunteer opportunities and records volunteer hours. Please watch this Galaxy instruction video to walk you through setting up an account, signing up as a team, and more.
How do I get started volunteering?
All volunteers must register online. If you haven’t done so already, please sign up for your volunteer account here. For most opportunities, you can simply sign up for the next shift that works for you. Our Food Smarts and Backpack Buddies programs require background checks and/or online training to start volunteering.
Do you allow court-ordered and lawyer-recommended volunteers?
Yes, we do! We accept volunteers 16 years and older serving court-ordered or lawyer-recommended community service. We WILL NOT accept volunteers who have been convicted of violent crimes, crimes of a sexual nature, or identity theft crimes. If you need CS hours to receive more details on how to sign up please click here!
All volunteers must disclose the nature of their conviction/lawyer recommendation and complete a service packet, which includes community services rules and IFFS sexual harassment policy before volunteer registration – NO EXCEPTIONS.
How do I sign up as a team?
If you would like to sign up as a group of 3 or more, please sign up as a team. Find the opportunity you wish to volunteer with and click "Respond as Team." You can then create a team name, reserve additional slots, and designate a team leader. To add or change attendees, go to your profile in the top right corner and click My Team>Manage Team>Add Members.
Please check out our in-depth sign-up video: HERE.

What will I be doing at my volunteer shift?
Please read the description carefully as our volunteer opportunities vary depending on what site you're helping out at. Our outdoor activities generally involve medium to heavy labor. For our indoor volunteer opportunities, expect light to medium labor. Most of our volunteer opportunities require standing for a long period of time. Our front desk is a great place for low-impact volunteering where you can be seated throughout your volunteer shift.
What if I'm running late or need to cancel?
We ask that volunteers try their best to notify the volunteer services team ahead of time. Contact Volunteers@FoodShuttle.org or call 919.390.1968 to let us know if you're running late or need to cancel.
What is the minimum age for youth volunteers?
Our minimum age varies based on the volunteer opportunity. Please look at each program's description for age requirements.
Where are you located?
Note that site locations for Community Health Education, Gardens for Everyone, Mobile Markets, and Special Events will be included in the description.
